S&T in the Philippine Context

This blog aimed to give a comprehensive perspective of Philippine Science and Technology patterned with the modules of our STS 10 class. The blog starts with the history of S&T in the Philippines, starting with what we know about pre colonial S&T. One might even see the so-called waves of technology in this historical narrative. This section of the blog is a reflection of the nature and practice of science and technology: while it is an intellectual endeavor, seeking knowledge and truth, it is also a practical endeavor that serves as a means to our ends in meeting basic necessities. The blog then proceeds to the discussion of Philippine agencies, thrusts and projects for developing S&T. The view that science is also a social endeavor is given emphasis in this section, the reader is presented with information on what the national government does and aims to achieve to further improve the condition of S&T as an industry here in the country. As the government provides academic scholarship to the youth, a culture oriented to S&T and so a lifestyle as well is being nurtured. This then leads to the recognition of how we impact the world around us, and vice versa. And S&T serves as a tool and method to mitigate the adverse effects of anthropogenic ecological transformation, as seen in the collaborative DRRM endeavor that is Project NOAH. Through Project NOAH, we are inculcated with the idea that S&T has a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of citizens, and of course, that S&T is a social endeavor, something we do with others and for others. The blog ends with information regarding the first Philippine microsatellite Diwata 1 and the research of Ateneo’s very own Dr. Toby on the use of virgin coconut oil in treating COVID-19. The same set of ideas and tools we have in healing the sick and preparing for calamities are used to participate in the effort to better understand the world and the universe we live in.

Science exists to bridge what we know and what we do not. Science is a bridge that we construct and cross simultaneously. Build not walls, but bridges! Padayon, siyentista!
